Leadership

Drew Dudley believes that leadership is not a characteristic reserved for the extraordinary. A reason for us making leadership into something bigger than us, we've made it about "changing the world". We've changed the title of leader from something as simple as making someone's day better to something that we're going to deserve one day. We take moments where we are leaders but don't let ourselves take credit for it in turn "we start to devalue the things we can do every day".

Drew Dudley also talks about his lollipop moment when he was at university. His simple action stayed with the girl for four years and was the sole reason she stayed in university and was in her current relationship. The girl was very anxious about going to university and thought about going home even crying about it the prior night. But Drew was passing out lollipops when he saw the girl, he then gave the lollipop to the guy next to her and told him he needed to give it to the beautiful woman next to him. Everyone around them started laughing, people made jokes and the guy's face turned red with embarrassment. Years later, when she found out Drew was leaving, she came and told him about the story and how much it affected her even mentioning she was still dating the guy that gave her the lollipop. And several years after he got an invite to their wedding.

Lollipop moments are special moments where one person positively affects another person but may not realise it. Lollipop moments are linked to leadership because Drew's definition of leadership is "moments of powerful interpersonal impact".  I agree with this idea of leadership as it is a much more tangible way that much more people can become leaders and improve each other's lives. I don't know if I have had any lollipop moments because no one has come up and told me directly that I've positively impacted their lives. But I'd like to hope that I've had at least a few lollipop moments in my life because I think that I'm a positive and supportive person. I always try to tell people they did a good job and support them as much as I can. Whilst I can't remember a certain lollipop moment in my life I think many of you are in the same boat as me but in reality, I think we as  Dudley said: "have taken the title of leader and made it about changing the world" and this is the reason for that. In one way or another, we've all been leaders and helped each other but because "Our greatest fear is not that we are inadequate. [it] is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that frightens us." If we would leave behind our old meaning of leadership and adapt to Drew's idea of leadership everyone would be much happier and people would feel that they are making a positive impact on the world.
